On the 28th of February, the Eloquent Arts Centre hosted a powerful sharing of Black Rose, a multi-genre dance production created by Romanah Zhane and Paul Steadman.
Black Rose is a moving exploration of the Black British experience, tracing a journey from the deep roots of the Windrush generation to the confident celebration of identity, culture, and belonging in modern Britain.
Blending dance, music, and storytelling, the production invites audiences into a powerful narrative of resilience, heritage, and cultural pride.

A Multi-Genre Dance Journey Through Black British History
Black Rose unfolds through six emotional chapters that reflect different stages of a shared cultural journey:
Legacy. Identity. Pressure. Rise. Love. Joy.
Each chapter represents a different moment in the evolving story of Black British identity. Together they form a powerful narrative that honours heritage while celebrating the strength and creativity of the present generation. The performance moves seamlessly between emotion and movement, allowing the audience to experience both the struggles and triumphs that have shaped the Black British community.

Dancers as the Heart of the Story
One of the most powerful elements of Black Rose is its storytelling approach.
Each dancer represents a specific emotional chapter within the production. Rather than simply performing choreography, the dancers embody the themes of the work through their movement and presence on stage.
This personalised approach allows each performer to carry the emotional weight of their scene, creating moments of raw vulnerability alongside the power of the ensemble.
The result is a performance that feels deeply personal while still speaking to a collective experience.

A Celebration of Identity, Culture, and Resilience
Black Rose reminds audiences that the story of Black British identity is not only about endurance, but about growth, creativity, and celebration.
Through its powerful choreography and emotional storytelling, the production highlights the beauty, strength, and cultural richness that continues to shape modern Britain.
At its heart, the message is simple yet powerful:
The Black Rose does not just survive. It blooms.

Supporting Arts and Culture in the Community
This powerful work was made possible with the support of Arts Council England, helping bring important stories and cultural experiences to audiences in Birmingham and beyond.
At Eloquent, we remain committed to supporting artists, performers, and creative work that celebrates identity, community, and the transformative power of the arts.
